...Screw you, BC Ferries!
Screw you, BC Ferries!
We left our home at 1:50pm on Thursday afternoon, hoping (wildly, we knew) to catch the special long weekend 2:30 sailing from Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay in Nanaimo. The line up was incredible! We arrived at 2:10 and knew that there was no way to get that boat. Its okay, we thought, we'll get the next 3:10 ship. But that time came and went and we hadn't moved. Hmmmm....oh well, the next sailing was 4:40. But lo and behold, we didn't even get to the ticket kiosk by that time. Finally things started to move at around 5pm. We arrived at the kiosk and the guy asked us for $48.50!!! Grrrrrr!!! Then we waited some more. Good thing Frank had his laptop with him. We watched a whole movie and a downloaded tv episode and still I had time to read a bit before we started to load. At 5:30 we were on the ferry. If you're keeping track, like I was, that's over three hours of waiting. On the ferry, other customers were saying that they had heard that the previous 2 sailing had been cancelled (mechanical? medical? reasons) and that was why we had to wait so long and why we were now behind schedule. Of course, noone at BC Ferries said anything to the thousands of paying customers. No explanation.
On another note, did you know that for an extra small, non-refundable fee of only $17.50 you can reserve your spot on a ferry? Double screw you, BC Ferries! I already pay taxes to maintain the highways, and you keep telling me that the ferries are an extension of the highways, now your telling me that I have to pay extra or I will have to wait to use my transportation route? Wait! Does that mean, if I pay a small, non-refundable fee that I can also skip the rush hour traffic on Hwy 1? That's what I call a cash grab. Oh yeah, to all those guys who did pay that small non-refundable fee, if something happened to the ferry that you planned to get on, you don't get a refund, that's the non-refundable part. You are supposed to get on the next available ferry, but tough nuts if you had an appointment or schedule or anything. The BC Ferry Executives must have a really hard job running a monopoly, subsidized organization. I think they just recently gave themselves a raise because it was so hard to count the money they gouged out of people. Riding the ferry now is a rich person's pleasure. Oh...get this. Apparently, the BC Ferry Corp. loses money on each ferry trip. It's not because of fuel prices or low ridership...nope...its because they have too many middle-managers. Great!
Anyways, we made it across to Vancouver Island, did our hiking/camping trip (more on that in a later post) and hurried back to Nanaimo to catch the last ferry crossing for the night. We didn't want to have to get a hotel in Nanaimo....I like my bed! Especially after roughing it for 3 nights. I pulled up to the ticket kiosk and begrudging handed over a crisp red $50 bill.
The lady said, " Ummm....that will be $73.50 please," holding her hand out for more money. "Huh?!?" we said.
"I will need $23.50 more, please."
"Wha??? There's only two of us. It was only $48.50 on Thursday!"
"Oh...that was a special promotion, its over now," she trilled, all happy-like.
"Are you kidding? $73.50? For two people?"
"I'm sorry, that's the price."
"Hmmmmpppfffttt! That's crazy, that's the last time we will ever come here. What would happen if we didn't have the money?" we asked.
"You'd have to leave the terminal."
We paid...we didn't have a choice. Either $73.50 now or $73.50 tomorrow plus that cost of a hotel room and dinner and breakfast.
But we didn't like it!
I tried to get Tuck to take a crap on their little prissy lawn. I thought, "they can darn well pay someone to come and clean up my dog's crap for $73.50." Tuck didn't oblige. I briefly thought of taking one myself instead. I didn't.
$73.50! That definitely will be the last trip to Vancouver Island for the Konig family.
"Screw you, BC Ferries!"

...good times with Kong kong.
My Kong kong is a very distinguished gentleman. He has always been impeccably groomed and proper. He never had a hair out of place. Mama used to get so fed up with him because he would literally spends hours in the bathroom getting ready. Mama said he would comb his hair until it was just right. I have rarely seen him ruffled or even with a five o'clock shadow.
That was until Mama became sick.
To see him not change out of his pajamas, or go unshaven for days, and to have his hair sticking up from his head was a major sign of his preoccupation and distress. I had to gently remind him that he should shower every few days. This was so unlike him.
Kong kong is also a very reticent man. He would not say much. Much of his communication was through head nods and pointing. Its not that he couldn't talk or didn't like to, I just think that he is naturally a quiet man. Whenever I saw him with old friends he would come alive and he would be laughing and cracking jokes. But with us, he was usually very quiet. Most of our communications consisted of me asking him questions and him nodding or softly grunting. Every once in awhile we were treated to the outgoing Kong kong.
The weekend we had Mama's celebration of life was very difficult for everyone. We went to the hospital to view Mama when we first arrived. The next day, Kong kong asked if he could go back again and see Mama. My Mom, sisters and I were very hesitant about that and weren't sure it that was such a good idea. I think we were worried that he would want to keep going back and that he wouldn't be able to let her go. I turned to Frank for his advice. He simply said that we shouldn't keep Kong kong for seeing her, that he probably needed to see that she was okay. We listened to Frank, and boy, am I glad that we did. Kong kong was very calm (compared to when he first saw her, according to Ting). He cried just a little and then told Mama that she could leave now, that he was going to be fine. He truly seemed to pull himself out of his depression and said his final goodbye to Mama. He was at peace.
That night we were all together again, eating and sharing stories. My Mom was about to head out to the airport to pick up her brother, Uncle Ron, from Toronto. Before she left she gave Kong kong one of the drinks that we were all having. I told her that it had alcohol in it. She said that was fine.
Well, Kong kong took a sip and said it was very tasty. We didn't think anything of it until sometime later, Kong kong turned to me and asked, "Tanya...was there any wine in this?"
I was shocked, I looked around at my sisters and husband for help. Didn't he know? Didn't Mom tell him? We all just stared wide-eyed at each other. I turned back to Kong kong, "Ummmm...I think it had just a little bit of alcohol, Kong kong," I said apologetically.
And then Kong kong did something that I will never forget. I'll let you watch.
He was so cute and funny and so hammered!
Frank started freaking out, because my Mom was due back any minute with her brother, Kong kong's son. He was sure we were all going to get yelled at. I told him not to worry, but the more he worried, the more I got nervous. Oh damn! We were going to be in so much trouble. Mom was going to kill us. Uncle Ron, someone we see maybe once every 10 years, is going to be horrified. Then Joel, Rachel's husband stated getting all worried, because he was the one making the drinks. Ruth-less (that's my Mom's nickname) was going to murder us! It wasn't fair! Mom was the one that actually gave him the drink. Entrapment!!!!
In the end, it was all anti-climatic. My Mom walked in, I hurried to explain the situation, and all she said was, "Good."
She was actually really happy to see Kong kong a little tipsy. He was laughing and talking with everyone. He even got up and danced! I'm not even kidding.
Kong kong was giving dance pointers!
I debated on whether or not to post these videos of Kong kong, but this is how I want to remember him. He was so fantastic that weekend. We were all worried about him and to see him that way made our hearts glow.
We don't need to worry about Kong kong. He is still the epitome of class, but he honoured us with a little bit of his humour that night. Also, I now know for a fact that Kong kong also gets the "Asian Flush" just like me!
Mama can rest in peace knowing that Kong kong is doing just fine.

...oh the places we've camped!
Thinking about camping Carp Lake up past Prince George, somewhere in the Okanagan and going back to 20 Mile Bay. Anybody want to join us?
The Other Side of Frank...
He is also a pretty wicked cook, the things he can do with eggs...mmmmmmmm!
Frank always says that he is a simple man, with simple wants and desires. However, I think he is a multi-faceted man, with many sides to his personality.
Here is some examples of Frank's other sides...not many people know this Frank.
All the following clips were taken by Ting. For some reason, she is always there to capture these "Frank moments". I think she jinxes him.
The story about this clip is that Uncle Joel was teaching Aislinn how to rope and he came up and said that she needed something to catch. Frank volunteered right away. It is a two part series. The first movie is Frank explaining why he was doing what he was about to do. Something about being a good role model for your kids. I think he was just being his usual "Awesome Dad" self. The second movie is the action shot.
The third video is one where Frank is going to skip his "World Famous Skipping Rock". I'll let him explain.
The last video is probably my favorite. It never ceases to amuse me.
Anyways, if you know Frank, you know that these video proofs of his sillier side are true gems. He is a great guy and we are lucky to know him.
